“Robotic Hip Replacement: A New Era of Safe and Precise Surgery in Orthopedics”
Over the course of my 32-year career, I have performed thousands of knee replacement surgeries. Some of these patients were truly challenging cases — those with severe deformities, patients who had undergone multiple previous surgeries, or cases where the joint structure was significantly deteriorated…
I always share one principle with patients who are going to have a knee replacement: “Entrust yourself to a doctor who is well-versed and experienced in this field and who can follow you up over the long term.”
Because a successful knee replacement surgery does not depend solely on the surgeon’s skill. The prosthesis used must be manufactured from high-quality materials, must have proven long-term clinical outcomes, and must be selected in the most suitable way for the patient’s anatomy. In addition, it is very important that the hospital where the surgery is performed has the technical infrastructure capable of carrying out this advanced surgery. And finally — perhaps just as important as the surgery itself — a good rehabilitation process is absolutely essential. When all these elements come together, the chance of success rises considerably.
Over the years, the point I struggled with most in certain cases was preoperative planning and placing the prosthesis in the correct size. No matter how experienced you are, the complexity of human anatomy can always pose a challenge.
In 2011, I experienced a turning point in my surgical career. At the time, the robotic system called MAKO was introduced at the hospital where I was serving as director. This system eliminated the planning difficulties that even the most experienced surgeons occasionally encounter, reducing the error rate to nearly zero. From my very first experience with it, I clearly saw the difference this technology brought to surgery.
Today, robotic knee replacement surgery is far more advanced, both in software and hardware. With fourth-generation systems, many potential problems are resolved through simulation before the surgery even takes place. I can say that robotic surgery has now become the most reliable operating-room companion of experienced orthopedic surgeons.
I now perform all of my knee replacement surgeries with robotic assistance. Before surgery, I obtain computed tomography (CT) scans of my patients, which allows me to evaluate the anatomical structure down to the finest detail and to plan the most accurate positioning of the prosthesis digitally, before the operation. In this way, I overcome many of the challenges that could arise during surgery well in advance.
In the near future, just as is already the case abroad, the majority of knee replacement surgeries in our country will also be performed with robotic systems. As a result, patients will experience both greater confidence in the surgery and greater comfort during the recovery process much more closely.
